Turbo Fire

I recently purchased a Turbo Fire exercise program. Being a long time Turbo Jam fan, I was super excited to try out the newest series from trainer Chalene Johnson.

I am only on my second week, but I can already see changes in my physical strength and energy levels. It comes with a 12 week schedule, all of the 11 workout dvds, fitness guide, "fuel the fire" nutrition guide, and the 5-Day Inferno Plan to
"See how you can lose up to 10 pounds in 5 days".

I love the recipes included in the guides, especially the family sized meals. I recommend the chicken tacos(but I made my own simple pico de gallo instead of using store bought), flank steak (I substituted with London Broil), and the Butternut Squash soup is super easy and yummy!

I really don't need to lose weight as much as I need to get into better shape and eat better. I admit that I drink too much diet soda and eat too much chocolate, so it is about time for me to take better care of myself. Enough with the excuses, it's time for me to Turbo!

Old Navy Activewear Pants

My Newest Hobby- Couponing!

Even though I have considered myself to be frugal for years, I never have been very consistent about using coupons. Then recently, one of my husband Dave's co-workers gave me her super nice coupon binder. That was the nudge I needed to get organized! Now, I can find all of my coupons and coordinate them with the weekly store flyers! I found these really nice and Freecoupon binder dividers and table of contents thanks to a friend online that I met on at diaperswappers.com. So, I printed out the table of contents and dividers for my binder, and now I can actually use my coupons before they expire! And thank you Jenny at southernsavers.com! She posts all of my favorite stores weekly deals and matches them up with coupons for maximum savings! I am getting all of the items that I use for a fraction of the cost. I also enjoy watching TLCs Extreme Couponing, but I try to be realistic in my approach. I never hoard my findings. A nice lady at a couponing class at our local public library mentioned that sales run in six week cycles, so you really don't need to buy more than your family will use in six weeks.
Just for fun, here is a picture of just a few of the products I have been blessed with for free or for pennies recently. Not only that, some of the stores actually PAID ME to take some of the products home to use or donate. Nice!

Scenic Lookout Mountain

Lookout Mountain, located in southeastern Tennessee and Northwest Georgia, is well-known in the south for breathtaking natural attractions, as well as the mountain’s historical and fun sight-seeing attractions. I have lived in the Lookout Mountain area for over eleven years, and I still enjoy exploring and discovering the amazing creation of this glorious mountain.
Rock City
A popular location for hikers to explore since the 1800’s, with incredible large rock formations, Rock City is one infamous, albeit weird attraction that you will not soon forget.
Looking down from top of one of Rock City’s many features, Lover’s Leap, you can take in one of the many beautiful views from the heights of Lookout Mountain. If you can make it to Rock City on a clear day, you can even see seven states from Lover’s Leap; Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Alabama.
Other highlights of Rock City, just to name a few, include the birds of prey shows, Big Rock Grill and the Fairyland Caverns. And I can’t forget the Fat Man’s Squeeze. Which is basically two gigantic rocks in close proximity that form a narrow passage way. Rock City also hosts special events and festivals year round including; the Enchanted corn Maize, the Enchanted Garden of Lights, Rocktoberfest, and Shamrock City. We started a family tradition when my kids were toddlers to go to the Garden of lights at Rock City during the Christmas season. Rock City is located only 6 miles from downtown Chattanooga, TN, so if you have a chance to visit Lookout Mountain, this would be worth a visit. The Incline Railway
It would be difficult to recommend sightseeing on Lookout Mountain without mentioning the Incline Railway. You probably remember the popular American song “Chattanooga Choo Choo”. Anyone visiting the area will be thrilled to encounter Chattanooga, TN and all of the area historical train landmarks. The Incline Railway is the world’s steepest passenger railway, which begins in historical St. Elmo at the foot of Lookout Mountain and travels up the incline of the side of the mountain, has been in operation since 1895. Lookout Mountain Flight Park
One of my dreams has always been to be able to fly. Luckily, just around the corner from my house on Lookout Mountain is the Lookout Mountain hang gliding school, which claims to be America’s #1 Hang Gliding school. This is likely due to the fact that the Lookout Mountain Flight Park has trained more pilots than any other hang gliding school in the United States. Students begin learning on solid ground and then work up to taking the Hang Gliders for a ride off of the top of Lookout Mountain. Even if you are not willing to take the flight, just parking and watching the hang gliders take off is an experience not to be missed. Please visit hanglide.com for more information.
Cloudland Canyon State Park
Closer to my home and therefore closer to my heart, is the visually stunning Cloudland Canyon State Park. Have you ever witnessed a hidden waterfall, like the kind from fairytales? The waterfalls at Cloudland are unlike any you have ever seen. Nestled deep within the Canyon, you hike a good distance down the trail to witness the beauty of nature. I should mention that swimming and wading in the water is not allowed for safety reasons, otherwise you may have some disappointed visitors looking to cool off deep in the gorge. I recommend visiting on a slightly rainy summer’s day. The cool mist coming down in the canyon is so refreshing.
If I had the time to hike daily, I would love to spend more of my days at Cloudland Canyon.

Part of Lookout Mountain has been named Fairyland, and the entire mountain resembles something out of a J.R.R. Tolkien (the author of the Lord of The Rings series) book. Driving around the area, some of the houses even leave you with the feeling that a hobbit could step out of the door and onto the front porch. If you want to escape the hectic pace of life, then come and experience the other-worldly beauty on Lookout Mountain.

I just picked up 3 bags of Reese's Peanut Butter Cups and Kit Kat that were "Buy Two Get One Free". Now, I am in my house thinking about grabbing one of these all morning long. I need to go ahead and sort these out for my kid's school Halloween parties so that I don't eat a whole bag myself!

What's For Dinner?

My own recipe that I took all of the parts of different chili recipes my DH likes and combined it into one!

David’s Favorite Chili

1lb ground beef
½ cup onion
1 can kidney beans, drained
1 can pork and beans, undrained
1 can diced tomatoes, undrained
2 tsp chili powder
1/2 tsp cumin
1/4 tsp pepper
½ tsp salt
½ cup spaghetti sauce
Squirt of ketchup
½ tsp hot sauce

Saute onion and brown ground beef in large pan. Add other ingredients and cook slowly for 1 hr.

A Long Overdue Update

We are having a busy summer and life seems to go faster than I have an ability to keep up with, but I wanted to do a few updates. This past school year was our first year not homeschooling, and it is working for us. The kids are growing so fast and keeping me busy.

Also, a laundry detergent recipe update- this month I stumbled upon a revolutionary recipe (for me, anyway). It is much simpler to measure, making it much easier to make. And it makes a HUGE batch that last longer, making it easier, again, by having to make it less often. The ingredients are the exact same, it's just simplified. A frugal mama posted this on a message board- it is on the recipe page for the Duggar family of 20 Kids and Counting fame, the popular TLC show. One tip- you will have to find a 5 gallon bucket with a lid to store the detergent. It was easy for me as we used to purchase laundry detergent from Sam's Club and had several empty buckets in our garage. Then, just transfer the detergent as needed into your large empty detergent bottles.

My New Baby Wrap!

My good friend Sandy K made this baby carrier for Little Dude and me- and it is amazing! She designed it just like the one she purchased when her little boy was a baby (only hers is blue). Unlike with slings and front packs, the wrap is fitted perfect to your body, so no back pain! I think the pretty yellow color is perfect for the summer. And isn't the baby bee in front so cute? I tell ya, I have some creative friends. These are photos she took of us so she can sell her baby wraps on ebay- you may see her wraps on there soon- if you want one, to. Disclaimer...baby not included. Hee, hee.

Homemade Laundry Detergent- an update

I have been using the liquid recipe for a couple of months now- and my clothes are as clean as ever! I am, however, very excited to try this easier dry version- very similar to what I am using except no melting on the stove or sloshing around wet ingredients. Woohoo!

I found these on a cloth diapering message board-

The first recipe is a gentle, greener version of laundry detergent, and the second recipe especially for cloth diapers!

Use amounts will vary depending on your water and machine! The amounts provided are general estimates.

These are non-sudsing recipes, so they're safe for HE and FL machines!

Super Gentle Homemade Laundry Soap

1 cup Washing Soda
1 cup 20 Mule Team Borax
1 bar Kirks Castile Soap (or other laundry soap)

Slice soap into strips and run through grater on kitchen aid, food processor, or by hand to make soap flakes.

Combine soap beads, borax, and washing soda. Done!

Use 1-2 tablespoon for small loads, 3-4 tablespoons for large loads.
(more or less depending on your water quality)

Homemade Diaper Detergent

1 cup Washing Soda
1 cup 20 Mule Team Borax
1 cup Oxyclean Free

Combine all ingredients. Done!

use 2 tablespoons for a small load, 1/4 cup for a large load.
(again, more or less depending on your water quality).

Tips and Notes:

My personal notes on the detergent....

-I find that I can just throw the powder in a hot wash, but I have to dissolve it in hot water before adding to a warm or cold wash

-be careful not to overload your washer!

-DO NOT use a blender! Slice soap and then use a food processor, or grate the whole bar by hand...a blender is not designed for this kind of chopping!

-washing soda can be hard to find...try calling your local grocery store to see if they carry it, or look for "PH up" where you buy pool supplies (or 100% sodium carbonate which is washing soda!)

-almost any soap can be used, I chose Kirks because it was as close to homemade as I could find locally. The original recipe called for "Fels Naptha" but that is some harsh stuff!

-both recipes are safe for sensitive skin and ezcema!

-there are little or no suds, but your stuff is still getting clean!

-the first time I used the laundry soap the water turned brown from the stuff that was left on my clothes from my previous detergent!

-both recipes are perfume-free, dye-free, enzyme-free, phosphate-free, and biodegradable!

-if you find that the *diaper* detergent isn't working as effectively after a few months, try switching to another brand and then switching back. ....*many* mamas who are switching between homemade & Tide or homemade & Allens every 3-6 months and finding that to be the best washing routine! I haven't heard from anyone who needs to switch with the laundry soap!

- non-sudsing, so it's safe for FL and HE machines!
- washing soda is available at Kroger, Hannafords, Acme, Biggs, and Publix
- washing soda is "sodium carbonate" and might be with pool supplies
- you can order washing soda at www.drugstore.com
- Kirks is available at Kroger, Frys, and Cracker Barrel
- you can use Dr Bronners soap instead of Kirks
- Fels Naptha is yucky stuff, and Ivory doesn't work well for laundry
- NO soap on diapers (the soap is in the *laundry* recipe)
- use oxyclean FREE and it's safer for your diapers
- mix this after the kids are in bed, in case you spill!
- don't subsitute baking soda!
- washing soda & borax ARE safe for your diapers used in this small amount!
- you can also use a cheese grater for the soap
- you can add essential oils to the powder and stir with a fork
- vinegar in the rinse can cause stinkies in microfiber
- this has been used with hemp without problems
- lots of bubbles is from your old detergent build up!
- always use a cold rinse first for diapers, so you don't set in stains
- with liquid Dr Bronners instead of soap there is a chance of staining from the oils
- you can use the diaper detergent for your clothes too
- sun oxygen cleaner is a cheaper alternative to oxyclean
- call 1-800-781-7529 to get Oxyclean Free for $6.99 (ask about free ship!)
- *approximate* costs: 3-bar pack Kirks $4, Borax $4, Oxyclean Free: $7, Washing soda $3.50 (all costs will vary by region)
-Canada moms: Borax at Zellers, A&P, Superstore and Walmart...Washing Soda and Oxyclean free at Walmart.

We used the product when baby was 6 weeks old on through 4 months. It was great for the earlier weeks, but not so much for my very mobile 4 month old, who could arch his back and get out of the seat! I would recommend this to parents, but with a caution of keeping a good eye on baby at all times!

So, here's the story behind my new photo behind my blog name. A couple of weeks ago I was having a tough morning with Wil. Upon realizing what an unseasonably mild summer morning it was, the kids and I headed to the local walking track to enjoy some exercise without overheating. The kids rode bikes and explored while I pushed Henry and chatted on the cellphone with my sister, Robin. Wil ran up from behind me with a sweet, teensy bouquet of wild flowers and said, "Mommy, look what I picked for you!" In his cute high-pitched voice. My heart just turned to mush. So I took it home and kept this photograph so my mommy bouquet will never wither.

My Little Miracles Monday

With the constant response of shock, disapproval, and discouraging comments that I often times receive when some see me out and about with ALL FIVE of my children (yes, we are figuring out how this happens, thank you very much)- I thought it would be fitting to give them my gentle answer in a blog dedicated to all of new baby's in our lives.

It's been one of those Days....

First, while I am getting everyone ready for the morning, baby H, aka little dude, rolls off of My Girl's bed and hits a fan before hitting the wood floor. Bloody nose, upset mom, who upsets kids- you get the picture.

The traumatic event set us back in time, and we were late for little dude and My Girl's well check up.

So we were made to wait almost 2 hours at the pedi, which doesn't ever happen at this doctor. Well, except for today.

And, on top of that, little dude was due for his second round of his delayed vacs. So he was poked in the finger for his iron check and received 4 shots. Poor baby!

Needless to say, I am very thankful that Baby H is okay (other than a small pump on the head and his hurt nose). And that the children were pretty great considering the wait at the pedi office. And I am especially thankful that a scare with our finances is starting to resolve.

Did I mention how nice it was to get home today? Welp, I'm off to get dinner ready and to start the kiddos on their chores.

I will never forget how you came up with the idea to paint my room in daisies. That is definatly one of my most favorite childhood memories:) I loved it when you let me help pick the color and design the sponge stamps. I have always been inspired by your creativity- and you always made it easy. From giving me my first journal, to inspiring me to write my first young authors story (which I won first place the year after)to telling me and my little sisters (when we were itty-bitty), or atually dramatically reinacting, famous children's stories, like Goldilocks! Thank you for all your inspiration, Aunt Terri!

My good friend Carey Dupree, who is amazing and super creative, passed on this yummy and fun kids recipe to me. The photos are of our first try at the recipe, 2 weeks ago, and I loved it. We have made it again, but in the shape of a crocodile. Which I forgot to grab the camera before we all started digging in. This bread makes any meal special. The older kids love helping to form the turtle parts and waiting for the turtle to bake in the oven (I wonder what he will look like when he is done?).

Animal Bread From Carey Dupree

1 7/8 cup water
1/4 cup canola oil
1/2 cup sugar
1 1/2 tsp salt
6 cups flour
1 Tblsp yeast

egg for wash and kosher salt for sprinkling just before baking.

Carey's Instructions (for Bread Machine):

Load in this oreder in bread machine. Run dough cycle. Punch down and form bread into desired animal shape. Allow to rest at least 10 minutes. Brush with egg wash and sprinkle with kosher salt. Bake @ 375 degrees approx. 25 minutes or until golden. She notes that kneading and rising times can be varied and it will still turn out fine.

Modifications for kitchen aid mixer with dough hook:

I let the yeast dissolve in the warmed water and sugar, in the kitchen aid bowl. Then I add all dough ingredients and knead with the kitchen aid mixer for a couple of minutes. I grease the bowl and let the dough rise covered, in a warm place, for an hour. Punch down and form bread into desired animal shape. Allow to rest at least 10 minutes. Brush with egg wash and sprinkle with kosher salt. Bake @ 375 degrees approx. 25 minutes or until golden. Again, Carey originally noted that kneading and rising times can be varied and it will still turn out fine.

To help celebrate my 11th Anniversary , I thought I should dedicate a post to my hubby, Dave, who I usually call David, ‘cause that is how he introduced himself to me in 1997. Or at least, I think. Things start getting fuzzy in my brain after 12 years.

I learned early on in our marriage that David hates Hamburger Helper (in my frugal attempts, I found a homemade Hamburger Helper mix that I thought would revolutionize my cooking) in all forms, including, but not limited to, chicken, cheeseburger, tuna, and lasagna varieties.

But after a few years, I learned that Dave loves tacos, pizza and sloppy Joes, which are all just as easy as hamburger helper. So I make these regularly and both of us are happy.

I have also learned that Dave loves me no matter what childbirth and age does to my body. I gained quite a bit of weight during one of my pregnancies, and he said that he didn’t even notice. Thankfully, I lost that baby weight, but I still have lots of stretch marks and irreversible body changes. But David still looks me in the eyes and tells me I am beautiful.

We both continue to change through the years but 2 constants remain in our marriage. Our commitment and love for each other, through all the ups and downs of life, and God's merciful love and grace in our marriage.

Thanks for our first 11 years together, David.

Homemade Laundry Detergent

As promised, here is my first attempt at making homemade laundry detergent.

Again, here are the ingredients.

Laundry Detergent (from the family homestead.com)

1/3 bar (is about ¾ cup when grated) fels naptha or laundry soap (I found Colgate Octagon Soap at Bi-Lo)
½ cup washing soda
½ cup Borax
2 at least 2 gallon, buckets (I used Ice Cream buckets and an old empty 1 gallon liquid detergent bottle
Essential Oil of Choice, for scent
1 gallon sized drink container, to measure additional water

First, I cut the bar of soap into thirds. Despite the name, it was a rectangle, not an octagon. One-third of a bar made about ¾ cup of grated soap.

Grate Soap and put it in saucepan.

I saved the remaining grated soap for the next 2 times I make the detergent.

Add six cups of water and heat (I did this on medium heat) until the soap melts(this is also when I heated the 4 cups of water needed, in a kettle, while cooking the first three ingredients in the saucepan).

I stirred until all the last bits of soap melted, about 20 minutes on medium heat. It was pretty foamy so I had to look carefully to see if the soap had indeed completely melted.

Add the ½ cup washing soda and the ½ cup Borax and stir until dissolved. Remove from heat.

Poor 4 cups of hot water into the bucket. Now add your soap mixture and stir. This is when I had to separate the mixture by half into 2 different containers- the 1 gallon ice cream bucket and the empty 1 gallon laundry detergent bottle. The smaller ice cream bucket in the picture was too small, it was only ½ gallon size. But I poured it into this first as it would be difficult to stir in the bottle. Next time, I will use a bigger bucket first.

Here, Kelly holds the funnel so I can pour the heavy ice cream bucket without spilling.

Add 1 gallon plus six cups of water and stir. This is also the time to add the essential oil. Let the mixture "gel" for 24 hours before using.

Use ½ cup of the detergent per each load of laundry. I marked the measuring cup lid to the old bottle with a sharpie at the ½ cup line, since it was only marked for concentrate. It took me almost an hour to make this. Now I should be all set!

My lower back was a bit sore, but I am hoping my efforts pay off. The cost of this detergent is only one cent a load! This will save us at least $8 a month, as we usually buy the “clear and free” laundry detergent because we have sensitive skin and exzema. This is naturally “clear and free”.

This makes 2 gallons for 64 loads. I use oxyclean with my whites and extra dirty loads anyway, so I will continue doing that.

I also wrote detergent on the ice cream bucket lid and I am storing that in my laundry room.

So, we have been using the detergent for 4 days, and I really like it. It cleaned ketchup without pre-treating, and even though the low-sudsing formula made me nervous, it cleans great. Even urine on crib bedding. It didn’t gel thickly like I thought it would, but that doesn’t bother me. I would like to try to use the Fels Naptha next time and see if that makes it thicker. I will post more updates as I use the detergent, but so far, I really am satisfied. It was totally worth the effort.

Healthy Child, Healthy World

I picked up this book by Christopher Gavigan from our local Library(the website is healthychild.org). Although I am not into the fear aspect of it all, I do support being good stewards of the Earth that God has entrusted to us, His children. Anyway, the timing couldn’t have been better as last week I suffered from a toxic reaction to the household cleaners that I was attempting to declutter. I accidentally mixed chemicals which could have been fatal (thankfully my kids were not around). I spent 3 hours with the worst headache of my life (evidentally toxic reactions kill brain cells), and vomiting induced by the excruciating head pain.

Not only that, but we are trying to pay off some debt and I am always looking for a way to save some money. Homemade cleaners can save me hundreds of dollars a year.

So, I was a prime canidate for switching to green and homemade cleaners that Healthy Child, Healthy World promotes. Plus, Did you know that cancer causing chemicals, among other unwanted side affects, can be found in the average cleaning supplies?

So, I am gradually making the switch. Here are the basics, in case anyone is interested in being gentler and cheaper while they clean J

Fruit and Veggie Cleaner- one part vinegar to 3 parts water

Glass cleaner- 1 part vinegar to 2 parts water

Basic Vinegar Rinse- To finish the job. Fill a squirt bottle with equal amounts white distilled vinegar and water. Add 15- 20 drops of pure peppermint or tea tree oil (note that some botanicals can be toxic if ingested). Shake to mix. Great for Floors, walls, windows, and for removing soap scum.

I love the Basic Vinegar Rinse! I used tea tree oil that I found at Target. Which I had purchased to use in a baby wipes recipe for my cloth diapers (which, by the way is saving us some major dough as well). It worked wonders on my windows and shutters. It also did well to clean the bathtub (which I first scrubbed with a borax and water paste). It also did great on my kitchen cabinets (even the grimey shelves). Plus, the tea tree oil makes it smell so woodsy and pleasant that I don’t think I will ever use windex again. (can you guess what made me sick last week??? Yep, the evil windex LOL. I feel like such a dope.)

All Purpose Cleaner (from Healthy Child, Healthy World)

½ tsp washing soda
½ tsp liquid Castile Soap
2 cups hot water
16 oz spray bottle

Mix ingredients in spray bottle and shake gently. Use on counters, cupboards,, or any surface. For tough dirt, leave on for a few minutes before wiping off. Washing soda can be substituted with 2and ½ tsp of Borax. I found the Arm and Hammer Washing soda at a local grocer (Ingles).

Homemade Soft Scrubber (Healthy Child, Healthy World)

½ Cup Baking Soda
Liquid Soap or Detergent
5-10 drops essential oil (like lavender or tea tree with natural antibacterial properties)

Place baking soda in a bowl. Slowly pour in liquid soap, stirring constantly, until consistency resembles frosting. Add essential oil, if desired. Scoop creamy mixture onto a sponge, scrub the surface, then rinse.

Mold and Mildew Cleaner use

Hydrogen Peroxide
Or
Borax
Or
Tea Tree Oil
Or
1 part vinegar and 2 parts water

Floor Cleaner

¼ cup vegetable oil- based soap
½ cup distilled vinegar
2 gallons hot water

For wood floors, substitute a teaspoon of glycerin instead of vinegar.

Polish Floors with Linseed Oil, available at home improvement stores.

Sprinkle Baking Soda on Floors and Vacuum to Freshen carpets.

Laundry Detergent (from the family homestead.com)

1/3 bar fels naptha or laundry soap
½ cup washing soda
½ cup Borax
Small, at least 2 gallon, bucket

Grate Soap and put it in saucepan. Add six cups of water and heat until the soap melts. Add the washing soda and the Borax and stir until dissolved. Remove from heat. Poor 4 cups of hot water into the bucket. Now add your soap mixture and stir. Add 1 gallon plus six cups of water and stir. Let the mixture gel for 24 hours. Use ½ cup of the detergent per each load of laundry.

I am out of laundry detergent and plan on making this recipe for the first time today. I am very excited as it only costs one cent per load! I hope it works well for us. I will post a review soon.

Compare the contents of a cabinet full of conventional commercial and toxic cleaners with the greener, healthier cabinet. One-quarter the price, half the volume. Twice the peace of mind. You do the math.

This is the beautiful heirloom baby blanket that my Grandma Kathy made for Henry. The story behind it is that it was made from squares that my Great-Great Grandma Vera hand stitched many years ago (before I was born). My Grandma Kathy started making it when I was a baby. So this is a very special blankie. Thanks, Grandma!

My dear friend Carey threw me a baby shower to be remembered. And look at the beautiful diaper cake that another dear friend, Kalyndra, managed to make me (with a 6 week old babe of her own!) The diaper cake is so cute- I am going to have trouble unduing this artistry it to use the diapers (and bottles and pacifiers- hich are also inside the cake). What a blast the party was. I am very blessed to receive a baby shower for my fifth baby. How special for our little guy to get brand new things of his very own.

This is what we did tonight. It was very easy, but I didn't plan ahead well to make room for 25 carmel apples in my fridge!

Caramel Apples from realsimple.com

2 pounds lady apples or tart apples, such as Macouns or Winesaps

1 pound caramel squares

10 wooden sticks

Wash and completely dry the apples. Insert a wooden stick into thetop end of each. Line a baking sheet with wax paper and set aside.In a small saucepan over low heat, combine the caramels with 1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons water. Cook until smooth, stirring occassionally, about 10 minutes. Remove from heat.While the caramel is hot, dip the apples in, swirling to coat evenly. Let the excess caramel drip off and place the apples on the lined baking sheet. Place in the refrigerator to harden, about 1 hour. Yield: Makes 10 apples

Our Fall Break- Makin' Smores

So, last night we built, ahem, David built a fire in our big backyard (we live in the country, don't worry) specifically so that we could roast marshmallows and make smores for the kids. As you can see in the first picture, it got a little hairy when the wind changed directions every so often and blew smoke and cinders at our faces. Here is poor Kelly shielding his eyes.

And Adria, getting ready to roast "just one more" marshmallow. And yes, I am pregnant so I had to eat smores for 2. It was very yummy. And I don't think I have tasted a smore in years. Made it all the better.

And this picture of Wil eating is smore kind of looks like I caught him off gaurd, doesn't it? My poor kids, mommy is definately not winning any awards for photography. It makes for very interesting scrapbooking, though.

Did I mention that I love fall? It is so nice being pregnant minus the humid summer.

Wil is now 4- even though he is only around 3 feet tall! I love my little guy. His birthday was actually on August 9th, but better late than never, right? He had a Thomas The Tank Engine birthday party this year, and I even made him a Thomas cake (it was a little rough around the edges, but Wil still loved it, anyway). I have to say that he anticipated this birthday for months as his older siblings talked it up big time all summer. He liked his presents, but his favorite thing was definitely the cake.

Our good friends, the Kvales, had us along on Saturday. Wow, can those Kvales hunt for eggs. Wil didn't quite get into the competitive spirit, he examined each egg carefully, and in the end, he preferred the blue colored eggs to the rest. The girls enjoyed the tea cup ride at the fun center's egg hunt (were we egg hunted for free rides), and a good time was had by all, even Heather and I who imposed a "Mommy tax" on some of the chocolate. Okay, so I can't complain about it when my pants get tooo tight again.

David buzzed all of Wil's hair off. Yes, I mean all of it. In the first stage, he resembled Dr. Phil ( like toddler male-pattern baldness). I was somewhat taken aback by the sudden change, but it is much easier to style his head now :) Plus, he was not screaming during the entire haircut like he usually does, so that was worth the sacrifice.

A friend of mine, Margaret Davis, recently went to Haiti with an aid group. She helped give the impoverished people in Haiti much needed dental care. While she was there, she was deeply moved by the extreme poverty and all the reality that comes from the poverty. Like the heaps of trash everywhere, even in front of a hospital. When the trash pile buids up, they just burn it all.

Please pray for the poor and needy in Haiti, and that God will use his children to bless all those in need in third world countries around the world.

David wanted to style Wil's hair a couuple of Sunday's ago for Worship Service. It grew on me after awhile. It definetly fits his spunky personality.

He Hit a Homerun!

Last night was the last game of the season, and my 8 year-old son hit a homerun! It was amazing. The great thing is- I prayed that he would get a good hit after he swung the first time and missed. Then, he had his best hit yet. I am so proud of my baby. (I will post an "after the game" picture this weekend).

Confession and Repentance

So, I have a confession to make. Today I found myself wanting to be anywhere but right where God has placed me. Two out of four of my beautiful children where whining- a third was throwing a tantrum because I was torturing him with a visit to the playground. Then, the fourth (we are using numbers for anonymity here) began to tear up over not having what he wanted exactly when he wanted it. I found my self back home with the little guy still having a fit. I put him down for a nap and the I started to cry. But what am I telling God when I am upset over the very thing He has placed before me? I was basically telling him that what he has planned isn't good enough. So, here I am at the repentence part of the story. I am so sorry for not loving my babies. I want to start the whole thing over. How many opportunities did I miss this afternoon to show them love?

What We Do On Sundays

Today I made Chicken Marsalas (or as I call it, Chicken Winton Marsalis) for Sunday Dinner. It was fun to try a new dish on Sunday for a change. I usually reserve experiments for Weekdays. David and I ate until we could eat no more and the kids enjoyed some ginger ale and pop (or coke, as they say hear in the south). I look foward to making Winton for dinner again very soon, as David has always been a big fan (of the chicken and the trumpet) .

Hungry, Hungry Hippos

My 5 yo son asked to play one of his favorite games (I loved this game when I was a little girl). However, we have to be flexible with the rules when you play with my 2 yo son. "What rules?," I say, "I didn't know Hungry Hippos had any rules. Don't you just smack the button until the Hippos are all satisfied?" If you look closely at the photo, my 2 yo is opening the hippo's mouth and shoving the marbles in. Notice also that his Hippo has the most marbles.

How to Poor Pancake Syrup 101

Okay, this is a class I need to take next fall. Yesterday morning I attempted to poor hot just then homemade syrup from a resteraunt style pourer when the metal handle thingy popped right off. Thankfully, the glass bottom only fell on a plate, so ther wasn't any broken glass involved in the chaos that was(is) my kitchen. However, syrup landed everywhere- the countertop, my hair, my clothes, but mostly all over the floor. Wait-it gets better. Then my 2 yo son runs in, fully clothed. He slips in the mess, lands on his rear and looks at me with a quiet fear. His face had a "she's gonna snap if I scream so I better not make a peep" expression. So, I spent all morning cleaning syrup off of everything. Wow is that stuff sticky. Maybe I should just "stick" with the secure-lidded,plastic-bottled, store-bought variety of the pancake syrup.

So, I finally entered this decade and created my very own blog. It will be filled with half thought-out musings sporadically typed-out inbetween loving my babies and keeping my household in-check. Case-in-point: I gotta go, my 2 yo is trying to breack down a bedroom door with his chubby little fist.
